Netsuke, inrō and sagemono

Glossary:

fundame very fine gold powder densely sprinkled onto wet lacquer, giving a smooth, matt surface

guri alternating layers of coloured lacquer carved in V-shaped cuts to reveal the various layers

hiramaki-e (‘flat sprinkled design’) coloured or metal powders sprinkled onto a wet lacquer ground and usually covered with a protective layer of lacquer

hirame irregularly shaped flakes of gold or silver made by flattening metal filings and scattered onto wet lacquer

kagamibuta netsuke with metal disk

kirigane (‘cut gold’) metal foil (often gold) cut into various shapes and individually set into a lacquer ground

maki-e (‘sprinkled design’) generic term for lacquer decoration using powdered metals sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create a design

nashiji (‘pear skin ground’) tiny, irregularly shaped flakes of gold embedded in amber coloured wet lacquer and then polished to a fine sheen

roiro (‘wax colour’) high quality black lacquer polished to deep gloss

shakudō alloy of copper and gold, patinated to a dark blue-black colour

shibuichi alloy of copper and silver, patinated to a dull grey-green colour

takamaki-e (high relief sprinkled design’) makie technique in which parts of the design are built up with lacquer mixed with charcoal or clay dust

togidashi maki-e (‘sprinkled designs revealed by polishing’) a type of makie in which the sprinkled design is covered with lacquer that is then polished away so that the design reappears flush with the surface

takamaki-e (‘raised sprinkled design’) metal powders sprinkled onto a wet lacquer that has been built up
