Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

Ceramic material composed of kaolin, quartz, and feldspar which is fired to a temperature of c.1350-1400⁰c. The resulting ceramic is vitreous, translucent, and white in colour.

The Barlow Collection
A dish of very similar design, excavated in Nanchang, and a similar deeper bowl, excavated in Fuzhou, both in Jiangxi province, can both be dated to 1348.
The dish has rounded sides and stands on a small, low tapering foot. The inside was moulded and shows a recessed centre, surrounded by a flower scroll with four quatrefoil blooms alternating with elaborate leaves in high relief, and a key-fret border. The outside is plain, the piece was glazed with a blue-tinged opaque white glaze, which was wiped from the rim, since the piece was fired upside down. The unglazed part has discoloured a pale yellowish tone.
