glaze, luted, slip, stoneware

  • glaze

    Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

  • luted

    The fusion of parts of ceramics using dilute clay slip.

    A semi-fluid clay applied to a ceramic before glazing either to coat the surface or for decorative effect.

  • stoneware

    Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1200-1300⁰c and is often buff or grey in colour.

    The Barlow Collection

    The vase has a pear-shaped body, a tall neck which slightly widens towards the rim and a straight foot with a broad heavy footring. Two ring handles are attached on either side, each of highly stylized dragon shape, with a protruding hook and raised vertical ribs, holding rings which are fixed by glaze. A single raised rib runs around the widest part and a double rib around the neck. The yellowish-green glaze leaves only the footring exposed in the reddish-brown biscuit.
