Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1200-1300⁰c and is often buff or grey in colour.

The Barlow Collection
It is thickly and evenly potted, with rounded conical sides with a groove below the rim to afford a better grip and a narrow tapering foot. It is covered with a greenish-grey glaze with a very even, dense black-stained crackle on the outside, and uneven crazing on the inside, with a large darker stain surrounded by areas of faint crackle. The unglazed footring shows the brownish-black ware. The base is slightly domed.
