The Barlow Collection
The jar is of tall ovoid form, has three bulging bands around the shoulder, a straight neck and a short, straight foot. The shoulder is applied with a freely modelled dragon with prominent, widely spaced claws, open mouth, antler-like horns, bushy strands of hair for a mane and at the legs, the spine sharply raised, the body incised with a scale pattern, the fore part of the legs striped. A small pearl raised on a cloud-like motif is attached in front of the dragon and a bird near its tail. The smooth light green glaze has an overall crackle, the rim and footring show the brick-red biscuit. The domed cover, which did not originally belong to this jar, has an everted rim and a reclining dog is attached as knob. The glaze colour is more olive-green, the unglazed underside has fired a light yellowish-brown.
