    The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

    Lozenge-shaped with truncated angles, being formed from a circular plate by folding over the edge to front or back; the front encrusted with parts of a dragon in brass amid clouds represented by irregular patches of brazing brass, silvered in places; two similar patches at the back.

    Japan Society's Loan Exhibition, London, 1905, no.Q.58. Duplicate of a gurad in the Victoria and Albert Museum, from the Hawkshaw Collection, no.3284, in the Catalogue of which it was dated by H.L.Joly as 17th-18th century.
