The Newberry Collection of Islamic Embroideries

A naskhi inscription in reserve against a red embroidered background. The embroidery takes the shape of a large chevron zigzag; very small remains of blue silk indicate that a narrow blue band once ran alongside the wide red one.

The inscription reads (al-ma)jd wa l-dan(?) wa l-r(ahma) which can only partly be translated as 'pomp and [?] and rest'. Threads are couched down over surface satin filling stitches.
