Description
These beautifully observed Japanese macaques were possibly based on a painting by the Nihonga artist Kishi Chikudō (1826-1897), who worked as a textile designer for the leading Kyoto silk manufacturer Nishimura Sōzaemon (Chisō). Images of Japanese monkeys, whether in paintings of on decorative arts, were particularly popular among Westerners. (Exhibition number 27)
