This textile may have been modelled on a painting. The signature ‘Tsunenobu’ may refer to the painter Kanō Tsunenobu (1636-1713), a nephew of the great master Kano Tanyū (1602-1674). Certainly, the gold background suggests the gold leaf typically used as backgrounds on folding screens or on the wall paintings and sliding screens of temples and grand mansions. As yet we know nothing about the Kyoto embroiderer Okamoto. (Exhibition number 12)
