Wang Xianzhi 王獻之 (AD 344-386), famous calligrapher, is depicted here trimming his brush in front of a scholar’s desk, preparing to perform calligraphy. Next to him is an antique bronze vessel. The accompanying calligraphy [EA2000.156.e], which appears opposite this painting in the album, tells a story about Wang’s response to his fame.
