Drum Bridge at Kameidō Tenjin Shrine

Description
Kameidō Tenjin Shrine, with its steeply arched ‘drum bridge’, was famous for its wisteria blossom in springtime. Through hanging wisteria flowers some people can be seen crossing the bridge while others sit beneath wisteria trellises in the background. Three swallows fly over the lake.

Hiroshige’s Views of Tokyo
As with the previous print [EAX.4358], the view is seen through flowers; here wisteria. The drum bridge (now replaced in ferro-concrete) is of exaggerated height here and probably represents the larger of two bridges at the site, the ‘Male’ bridge.
