A display to commemorate the contribution of Mary Tregear to the Ashmolean Museum.
Most of the paintings acquired by Mary Tregear for the China collection were modern and contemporary works in ink on paper with traditional subject matter. Those presented here include landscapes by the leading 20th century masters Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), Huang Binhong (1864-1955), Fu Baoshi (1904-1965) and Guan Shanyue (1912-2000), as well as flower and animal paintings.
Seeking to extend the date range of the collection, Mary Tregear also acquired Qing dynasty works such as the water buffalo landscape by Li Shizhuo (1687-1765), as well as contemporary works (see ‘Hong Kong artists’).
The last hanging scroll on display here has been purchased with the assistance of the Friends of the Ashmolean in recognition of Mary Tregear's Keepership of the Department of Eastern Art.
