Textile fragment with stylized plants in pots, and a large circular design

  • Literature notes

Two large stylized plants, each placed in a pot; in the centre is a heart-shaped leaf, red with white dots, and two large brown leaves with white dots emerge from the pot on either side. A large circular design has a white frame with red and brown flowers, and on two sides of the fragment are brown bands with white tendrils and rosettes.

The reverse shows less dye saturation than the surface. It is apparent that the brown design elements were first printed, and the different mordant for the red was then filled in, possibly partly by hand. The dye analysis has shown that for both brown and red the colorant was alizarin with purpurin, the source of which was Rubia tinctorum L.
