Black ware vase with two birds

    The ovoid vessel has wide rounded shoulders and a short, narrow neck with a sharp flange. It rests on a narrow foot with broad footring and recessed base. The black glaze is decorated in bold, swiftly applied strokes of rust brown with two stylized birds with long beaks and splayed wings, and the glaze has in places turned a mottled olive-green. The base is glazed, the footring unglazed, and the body is of light yellowish-brown colour.

glaze, stoneware

  • glaze

    Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

  • stoneware

    Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1200-1300⁰c and is often buff or grey in colour.
