Eastern Art Online welcomes you to explore its collection of artefacts from the Islamic World on the occasion on the Hajj season. Many of these pieces are on display in the Ashmolean's Islamic Middle East gallery.
The Hajj is the pilgrimage to Mecca – the fifth pillar of Islam – which every Muslim, who is physically able and can afford to do so, should perform at least once in a lifetime. The pilgrimage is performed during the twelfth and last month of the Islamic calendar, called Dhu al-Hijjah. The actual visit to the Holy places takes place between the 8th and 12th of the month, which this year corresponds to 4th-8th November 2011.
