Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

A semi-fluid clay applied to a ceramic before glazing either to coat the surface or for decorative effect.

The Barlow Collection
This box and cover do not belong together, both being made of different material. The box was probably a cosmetics container, the cover may have formed part of an incense burner.
The box has straight sides with a recessed rim, and tapers from an angle down to the low, unevenly shaped foot. It is heavily potted, the body covered with a white slip and a brownish-green glaze, which covers most of the outside and inside, but leaves the rim areas, and the lower part of the outside exposed in the dark purplish-red biscuit. The white slip has run down to the foot in one place.
The domed cover has a flat top with a mushroom-shaped knob, the sides are pierced with three almond-shaped openings, below which a band of clay is applied, pinched into undulating ‘piecrust’ shape. A bluish-green glaze is applied to the upper part of the cover and the center inside, leaving a large area around the rim free, where the biscuit has fired a yellowish-buff tone, while it turned grey under the glaze.
