    The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

    Faint mokkō; on the front, in modelling and iroye incrustation, is a sennin (Taoist hermit) carrying a peony flower in a basket; clouds above; at the back two thick transverse bars of iron (about 0.4" wide) have been let into the copper flush with its general surface, the latter being covered with fine horizontal grooving; on the bars are parts of a peony bush in katakiri engraving, with gold centres to the flowers; also on the lower bar is the signature; shakudō rim; a trifoliate kodzuka-hole, plugged, is imitated by engraving on both faces of the guard. Signed in seal form: Tōu.
