Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

porcelain
Ceramic material composed of kaolin, quartz, and feldspar which is fired to a temperature of c.1350-1400⁰c. The resulting ceramic is vitreous, translucent, and white in colour.

The Barlow Collection
The rounded bowl has wide everted sides and a tall splayed stem. The inside is incised with a central six-character reign mark in a double ring, surrounded by a dense lotus scroll, formally laid out with six large blooms encircled by stems, with dense foliage filling all available space. The outside is engraved with a similar lotus scroll above a band of slender petal panels, and another formal lotus scroll with two blooms decorates the stem. The glaze is colourless and the porcelain body clear white.
