This sketch was drawn in 1999 when Xu Bing went to the Himalayas, on a visit organised by the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki. This is one of the first landscripts he drew and shows how the method developed, in other works for example he uses the character 水 (water) for river water, 木 (tree) to depict trees. This work depicts a thatched pavilion with wooden pillars on stone bases, for storing potatoes.
