  • kozuka

    The handle that holds the small knife called the kogatana.

    alloy of copper and gold, patinated to a dark blue-black colour

    Japanese sword guard.

    The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

    Octagonal; asymmetrically pierced with five square holes, three of them plugged with copper originally gilt, two with shakudō; each plug is pierced with five rows of "dots dashes", all differently combined; copper-gilt lining to kodzuka-hole (the other hole cut later); stout raised rim of copper plated with shakudō, which is worn through here and there, revealing the copper.
