nunome-zōgan, tsuba

  • nunome-zōgan

    Decorative application of metal sheeting (generally of gold or silver) where the iron ground is first cross-hatched and the metal burnished on.

  • tsuba

    Japanese sword guard.

    The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

    Symmetrical open work design composed of a narrow border of rounded cruciform shape, the outer angles each occupied by the double-scrolled end of a stem which passes through to the group of stems (with leaves and six-petalled flowers) occupying the inner space; each face richly gilt in nunome with lines and small diapers.
