Luxury copies of celebrated literary texts often featured rich decorative programs, including gold illuminations decorating frontispieces and other areas of the text. Used at times to emphasize specific passages, illuminations are predominantly ornamental and are generally not related to the text. The margins of this page, covered with agile golden brushstrokes, are populated by birds and animals amid lush vegetation, a subject that enjoyed great popularity in the Indo-Persian manuscript tradition for several centuries.
