    The Barlow Collection

The small jar has straight sides, a sloping shoulder with a short splayed neck, and a flat base. Four bands of clay are applied round the sides, joined to four legs shaped as animal paws. The legs have incised lines indicating ruffled skin and incisions indicating claws, the applied bands above are impressed with a diaper design. Two incised lines encircle the shoulder. The beige-coloured stoneware bears a white slip and a matt white glaze, the glaze leaving base and legs free, the slip ending higher up. The rim was also left unglazed, since the piece probably once had a cover.
