Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1200-1300⁰c and is often buff or grey in colour.

The Barlow Collection
The bowl has rounded sides with an inward curved rim, and a broad, nearly solid foot with low footring. The inside has a very small flat centre and the sides are incised with two parrots in flight, sketchily rendered, with combed strokes to indicate wing and tail feathers, and two other zigzag scratchings. The outside is plain. The coarse body bears a grey-green glaze, which leaves most of the base free, where some sand is adhering to the light brown biscuit.
