The Barlow Collection
The usage of pieces such as this and its companion in the Barlow Collection, [LI1301.150] is not known.
The animal is heavily modelled, depicted reclining, its four thin legs separately attached, folded under the body, the tail attached like a lug. The head is well modelled with button eyes in clearly shaped sockets, horns with parallel incisions and pointed ears, the mouth is closed. The top of the head is pierced with a circular aperture that continues into the animal’s body. The haunches and spine are indicated by incising, and both sides show stylized wings, incised and stippled. A mottled, light yellowish-green glaze covers the whole animal, the eyes are painted in dark iron-brown. Two bar-shaped spurs have left rough marks underneath between each pair of legs, the back touched another piece during firing.
