    The Barlow Collection

The piece is imitating a Ding dish of the Northern Song period (AD 960–1127), but the stoneware is very light in weight, the glaze thick and opaque, and the design deeply carved in relief – features not known from the originals.

The shallow curved dish flares slightly towards the rim and rests on a low and thin foot. The inside is carved with a lotus spray with a small bloom and large leaf, with a band around the rim left plain, as is the outside. The piece is covered with a thick matt, opaque cream-white glaze, except for the rim, where the off-white stoneware is visible.
