Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

The fusion of parts of ceramics using dilute clay slip.

porcelain
Ceramic material composed of kaolin, quartz, and feldspar which is fired to a temperature of c.1350-1400⁰c. The resulting ceramic is vitreous, translucent, and white in colour.

The Barlow Collection
The small vase copies – in miniature – a type known from the Southern Song period (1127–1279). As the Song pieces were made from dark brown clay, but the present piece from white porcelain, the exposed areas have been coloured brown.
The piece is well formed, of rounded rectangular section, with pear-shaped profile, straight neck flanked by two tubular lugs, and a straight, rounded rectangular foot. The thick glaze is opaque and of even bluish-grey tone, the unglazed foot has been covered with a dark brown dressing to hide the white body.
