    The Barlow Collection

The bowl is vaguely reminiscent of Song dynasty (AD 960–1279) tea bowls, but the material is much finer and the glaze much glossier.

The bowl is extremely heavily potted, with curved conical sides, a groove below the flared rim, and a straight, nearly solid foot with a well-cut low footring. The inside and outside are covered with a glossy, even, smooth brownish-black glaze, which ends above the foot and leaves the lowest part, foot and base exposed in the biscuit. The biscuit has fired a light brownish-yellow tone and was covered with a dark brown coating which has partly flaked off. The rim is bound in copper.
