Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

The fusion of parts of ceramics using dilute clay slip.

porcelain
Ceramic material composed of kaolin, quartz, and feldspar which is fired to a temperature of c.1350-1400⁰c. The resulting ceramic is vitreous, translucent, and white in colour.

The Barlow Collection
The vase has a depressed globular body, a tall flared foot with a footring with an angular flange, and a tall waisted neck with a squared protruding rim. The neck shows clear luting lines. The body is decorated with an impressed pattern of scrolling lotus around the shoulder, with blooms and leaves on a stippled ground, with two applied animal-mask ring handles, and two bands of lozenge motifs enclosing florets below, and a band of narrow upright petals above the foot. The neck and foot are plain. The light blue-tinged glaze stops inside the neck and halfway down the foot, revealing a yellowish-buff body.
