The Barlow Collection
Although this bowl and cover fit well together stylistically and would originally have been combined in a similar way, the two pieces did not originally belong, as they are very different in quality, the lid being much finer.
The deep U-shaped bowl rests on a high straight foot and has a convex base. It is carved on the outside with a stylized flower scroll with two large fully opened blooms between two smaller ones, depicted in profile. The olive-green glaze is strongly crazed, the crackle with brown discoloration probably from contact with earth. The sides show cracks with a gilt repair. The base is very thinly covered with glaze and the footring largely unglazed, showing a brown biscuit.
The domed cover has an everted rim and a small curled stalk-shaped knob. It is made of a lighter-firing clay and its smooth olive-green glaze, which was applied over a pale slip, has no crazing and is very fine in texture. It is carved with a flower scroll with three similar smaller blooms as on the bowl. The underside is unglazed but slipped.
