glaze, luted, slip, stoneware

  • glaze

    Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

    The fusion of parts of ceramics using dilute clay slip.

    A semi-fluid clay applied to a ceramic before glazing either to coat the surface or for decorative effect.

  • stoneware

    Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1200-1300⁰c and is often buff or grey in colour.

    The Barlow Collection

    Small vessels of this type would have been fitted to the bars of a bird cage.

    The small piece is finely potted, in the form of a pointed fruit, with a somewhat raised lip and a small loop attached below the widest part. A horizontal looting line is clearly visible on the inside. The rim is unglazed and has fired a light brown, the glaze is evenly applied, of grey-green tone.
