  • earthenware

    Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1000-1200⁰c. The resulting ceramic is non-vitreous and varies in colour from dark red to yellow.

  • glaze

    Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

    The Barlow Collection

    The wide rounded dish has an everted rim with raised thickened lip and a tapering foot. The inner sides are deeply carved with vertical grooves. The piece is very heavily potted, of brown earthenware and covered with an opaque light yellowish-green glaze suffused with overall streaky mottling. A wide ring has been left unglazed on the base to support the piece on a ring-shaped support in the firing, and has fired brown. The support touched the glaze and had to be removed by force, leaving a purplish-red mark. The glaze has pooled to a very thick layer in the centre and has coagulated in thick drops around the footring.
