    The Barlow Collection

The bowl has conical sides with deep horizontal turning marks, and a broad rim flange with a slight groove to afford a better grip. The black glaze pools to a thick layer off-centre inside, as the bowl stood obliquely in the kiln, and fades to a thin brown layer at the rim. It shows ‘hare’s fur’ mottling around the sides and is decorated with five radiating rust-brown splashes. The outside is mainly glazed in rust-brown, which turns black at the rim and has an overall metallic sheen. The glaze was applied in two layers, the lower one reaching further down than the upper. The lower part of the sides, foot and base are free of glaze, showing the buff-coloured body.
