Vitreous coating applied to the surface of a ceramic to make it impermeable or for decorative effect.

A semi-fluid clay applied to a ceramic before glazing either to coat the surface or for decorative effect.

Ceramic material made of clay which is fired to a temperature of c.1200-1300⁰c and is often buff or grey in colour.

The Barlow Collection
The bowl is imitating a Cizhou piece of the Jin dynasty (1115–1234), but the potting, spur marks, abstract designs and highly glossy glaze are all untypical of that period.
The bowl has rounded sides and a somewhat flared rim and rests on an unevenly cut, thick straight foot. The grey stoneware body is covered with a white slip and a transparent glaze and the inside is painted in black slip with an abstract motif in the centre and four more leaf-like calligraphic motifs around it, both enclosed by a thick and a thin black line. The outside is undecorated, with the slip reaching two thirds, the glaze only one third down the sides. The glaze is very glossy and has a slight ivory tinge. The thick black line inside shows five thin bar-shaped spur marks.
