    The Barlow Collection

    A small jar of this type without cover has been recovered from a ship wrecked off the coast of Korea in 1323.

    The small baluster jar has wide rounded shoulders, and tapers towards the short neck and the slightly flared foot which has a prominent chamfered edge, and a pointed base. The shallow domed cover has an everted wavy rim with four notches. The jar has horizontal incised lines around the middle and is decorated with three iron-brown splashes, the cover with three matching splashes on the rim and a fourth in the centre. The olive-green glaze leaves the underside of the cover, rim and footring of the jar exposed in the brick-red biscuit, but under the glaze the body is off-white; the cover was fired in place and removed by force, leaving traces on both rims.
