  • Islamic Seals and Talismans by Ludvik Kalus

Catalogue of Islamic Seals and Talismans

Yellow chalcedony; bezel, bevelled towards the front (but only very slightly); rectangular with cut angles; back angle cut, frontal angle rounded. Two lines of cursive script (nasta`līq) separated by a straight line consisting of the return of the loop of the final yā of the last word in the first line.

    (1) My trust is in my Creator توكلى على خالقي

    1117 [?]/1705-6 48 ٤٨ [؟] ١١١٧

    (2) His servant Faraḥ [or Farrukh or Faraj ?] [فرج؟ or عبده فرح [فرخ

There are small flowers, consisting of simple strokes, schematically spread on the ground.

The reading of the figures is uncertain. The year 1117/1705-6 is the 50th year of the reign of the Mughal Emperor Aurangzīb (1068-1118/1658-1707), so the second group of figures does not designate the year of the Emperor's reign. Is it just an error?
