kufic

  • kufic

    A term denoting various styles of angular Arabic script. Emerged in the early centuries of Islam, kufic soon became the preferred hand to copy holy texts.

    White opaque chalcedony; cabochon, plain-convex; oval; angle cut. One word in a rectangular frame (A) surrounded on every side by one line of inscription (B 1-4: 1 - above, 2 - on the left, 3 - beneath, 4 - on the right) and its outline doubled by the base line of each of these inscriptions. Kufic script, without dots.

    B - (1) ‘Alī, al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥusayn, ‘Alī على الحسن الحسين على
    (2) Muḥammad, Ja‘far محمد جعفر
    (3) Mūsā, ‘Alī, Muḥammad موسى على محمد
    (4) ‘Alī, al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥujja ( = Muḥammad) على الحسن الحجة

    Could perhaps be classified at the end of the classical period (I.1)
