  • The A.H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba) by Albert James Koop

The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Cupped; an openwork guard plugged with soft metals; two bottle-gourds with leaves and tendrils, one leaf encrusted on each face in copper; the details are lightly modelled on the convex front and engraved on the concave back; the large openings to right and left of the seppadai are filled with plain shakudō backed by striated white metal; on the front of the leaves are several dewdrops in gold.

    A remarkable piece.
