  • The A.H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba) by Albert James Koop

The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Cupped; very irregular surface incised with four large characters [Japanese text], Jinchū hōkoku ("complete loyalty serving the country"); the back is faintly inscribed with a signature Michi- ... ([Japanese text] ...?) kore wo tsukuru and a date Tempō VI (1835), midsummer.

This absurdly large guard has actually been fitted to a sword. Even without the frank dating, one could only characterise it as a modern piece in blatant imitation of archaic styles.
