nunome-zōgan, tsuba

  • nunome-zōgan

    Decorative application of metal sheeting (generally of gold or silver) where the iron ground is first cross-hatched and the metal burnished on.

  • tsuba

    Japanese sword guard.

    Rounded oblong; bi-concave; in low relief above are two maple-leaves on one stalk, the smaller gilt, the larger (continued over to the back) edged with gold; slightly irregular ground below, with large oval udenuki holes, each having a raised vandyked edging gilt or silvered in nunome; specially made tang-hole plugs of silver; chesnut-shaped rh.
