nunome-zōgan, tsuba

  • nunome-zōgan

    Decorative application of metal sheeting (generally of gold or silver) where the iron ground is first cross-hatched and the metal burnished on.

  • tsuba

    Japanese sword guard.

    The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

    Mokkō; on each face a landscape combined of four of the Eight Views of Lake Ōmi; these are: - on front, Awadzu no serian (glorious sunset sky at A.), Karasaki no yau (night rain at K.), Katata no rekugan (wild-geese alighting at K.) Yabase no kihan (returning sailboats at Y.), Seta no sekishō (evening glow at S.) and Mil no banshō (the evening bell at Mii-dera); and, on the back, Hira no bosetsu (lingering snow on Mt. Hira) and Ishiyama no shūgwatsu (the autumn moon at I,); sails and snow on Mt. Hira encrusted in silver; edge gilt; gold wire eding to sd. ad rh.
