nunome-zōgan, tsuba

  • nunome-zōgan

    Decorative application of metal sheeting (generally of gold or silver) where the iron ground is first cross-hatched and the metal burnished on.

  • tsuba

    Japanese sword guard.

    The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

    Rounded oblong; modelled in fairly bold relief; on the front, men poling a boat with sqaure sail in silver, distant hills with large temple-buildings, belfry, and various small figures, two crossing a bridge; at the back, a continuation of the scene (the boat passing over the edge), with three flying wild-geese below; details in tinted gold nunome (Y-punch) and iroye incrustation; sd. and rh. contained within a fimbriated outline.
