Decorative application of metal sheeting (generally of gold or silver) where the iron ground is first cross-hatched and the metal burnished on.

The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)
An old pine-tree growing amongst rocks near part of a torii archway, two hares scampering over waves, and the full moon amid a stretch of clouds; the torii and moon completely gilt in nunome, the clouds in patches only; seppadai and ryōhitsu form a complete shape of pointed-lobed outline, with a thin groove bordering it.
Hawkshaw Collection, no.3407. It is only the shape of the seppadai (for which compare No.813 [EAX.10813]) that tempts me to place this attractive guard here.
