The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Shakudō nanako. Bold relief with rich iro-e zōgan incrustation; on the front an open-air scene with tent-curtain and wooden wall enclosure, within which a Chinese dignitary (Emperor?) with attendants sits in state watching a formal dance by warriors; above are seen pine-trees, rocks, a waterfall, and a pair of flying "phoenixes"; at the back a Chinese warrior on a veranda knocks at the door of a gatehouse. Gotō-Sōten style.
