  • The A.H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba) by Albert James Koop

The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Modelled in openwork as five large tsuta badges, with a little karakusa of which the leaves are touched with gold nunome; the venation on the badges is alternately raised or sunk (engraved), according as each is showing its back or its face; narrow border.

This artist is unrecorded, but his name, which may be read Shōeki instead of Katsuyoshi, reminds one of that of Nakagawa Isshō [Japanese text], one of Gotō Ichijō's pupils (Group XXXIVa). The two may possibly be related.
