The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Broad border of double-concave section, covered with trails of clematis in delicate, but sharp relief, on a fine stone-grain ground; this is separated by a "wire" edge from the field, which is of a plain matting pattern; an unusual feature for a Chōshū guard is the incrustation in full relief of shibuichi, with touches of gold, of a large cricket near the base.

Seymour Trower Collection, part of lot 1463.
