  • The A.H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba) by Albert James Koop

The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Finely modelled in low relief with a seashore scene, continued on the back, with a forked pine-tree and two children (representing the old couple, spirits of the twin pines of Takasago); slight gold inlay on their coats.

    Signed: Chōhan Masayuki [Japanese text].

Possibly the Ayabe Masayuki who signs an extraordinarily fine guard in the Victoria and Albert Museum, and one in the Hamburg Museum.
