  • The A.H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba) by Albert James Koop

The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Rounded oblong, thickening towards the moulded edge (which imitates a slender false rim); further description the same as for No.302 [EAX.10302], but without the sawari.

    Style of Shōami Kanesada.

This and the previous guard [EAX.10302], though somewhat separated in date, are obviously very similar. The ascription to the Shōami (characters for the names not stated), neither of which I have been able to identify, originated apparently with H. L. Joly, who may have noted these designs on guards so signed.
