  • The A.H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba) by Albert James Koop

The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Copper of rather dingy patina. Thin; almost square, with rounded edges; pierced in negative sihouette with a peach, one of its leaves, and an oval hole; inlaid on both faces wth the stem and four more of the leaves in gold, silver and shakudō wire; back of seppadai stamped with a small signature: Chūyo [Japanese text] or Tadachika [Japanese text].

    H. L. Joly has suggested that this might be Higo work (Group XIII). It is a fine guard, despite the remark about the patina.
