  • The A.H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba) by Albert James Koop

The A. H. Church Collection of Japanese Sword-Guards (Tsuba)

Rounded octagonal; in the front deeply punched with nine different stamps, including a coin of the Wadō era, a sparrow, a spray of bamboo, a maple-leaf, a cherry-blossom (back view), and various other flowers; the back shows four similar punchings (not coinciding with those on the front), including part of the coin, the leaf and two flowers (one double-struck). Subsequent to the punching the guard has been shaped up, the ryōhitsu and the tang-hole cut, and the edge slightly hammered up; while trails of karakusa in gold wire nunome have been added in various parts, including the edge.

Hayashi Collection. A guard of very similar make, showing impressions from the same dies (except the coin), was given by Sir Arthur Church to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1914.
